Ponte Roma and scuba are both structured knit fabrics, but they are not the same. Ponte usually has a smoother double-knit construction and a more tailored hand feel, while scuba often feels thicker, springier and more cushion-like.
When Ponte Roma works better
Choose ponte when the garment needs clean drape, comfort and moderate structure. It is popular for dresses, slim trousers, skirts and everyday womenswear where the fabric should look polished but still wearable.
When scuba works better
Choose scuba or air-layer knit when the design needs more volume, shape retention or a modern sculptural look. Scuba can work well for skirts, fitted dresses, structured tops and fashion pieces that require a thicker hand feel.
Sampling advice
Do not choose only by product name. Ask for GSM, thickness, stretch, recovery, width and finishing. A small sample can show color and surface, but a yardage swatch is better for testing drape and sewing.
